Craniosacral Therapy & Cranial Osteopathy
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) and cranial osteopathy both derive from the work of an osteopath named William Garner Sutherland in the 1930s. It is a very gentle yet powerful, hands on form of treatment that encourages the body back to ‘stillness’ where healing can take place.
The treatment is about ‘listening’ to the body’s intrinsic rhythms and pulsations, for patterns of congestion and resistance using the medium of touch. Through this deep listening the therapist encourages a rebalancing and revitalization of the system and assists the release of resistances in the tissues and fluids of the body.
The intention of treatment is to stimulate and enhance the body’s own self healing and self regulating mechanisms. Every cell in the body expresses subtle rhythms, which are essential for the continuance of health, producing a harmony of body and mind.
At the core of treatment are the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord. Palpation of these membranes, and subtle observation of the essential rhythms of the cerebrospinal fluid allows the release of many restrictions in the body. Treatment also involves balancing the bones of the cranium (head) and the sacral bone at the base of the spine.
Manual therapies such as Cranial Osteoapthy may be
effective in treating:
Aches and Pains
Circulatory Problems, Local or
Minor [e.g. Poor Circulation]
Relax, Inability to
Sports Injuries, Minor
Is CST suitable for everyone?
Craniosacral treatment is suitable for everyone from the youngest baby to the oldest man or woman.
Craniosacral treatment is used to treat many commonly occurring health complaints (see list above). It is particularly associated with easing the effects of birth trauma in babies. It can also be effective as a general therapy to help people feel well and get back “in balance”.
What happens in a treatment?
Most people who experience Craniosacral treatment will tell you that it is extremely pleasant.
Before you start, your therapist will take a case history and ask you questions about the specific ailments which are bothering you. Your therapist will then examine you and you will be asked to lie down for the treatment. (Some conditions e.g. back problems may require you to be partially undressed for the initial examination). Your therapist will then start the therapy which involves very lightly touching you on different parts of the body - especially the head (cranium) and lower back (sacrum).
A typical session lasts for between 45 and 60 minutes.
Craniosacral treatment is experienced differently by everyone. You may feel heat, tingling, gentle pulsing, a feeling of increased gravity or a sense of profound meditation and relaxation.
The best way to find out more is to try it yourself with a Cranial Osteopath.
